ProblemPrinting demonstrates a printing path, not that Windows installed the multifunction device’s scanner function.

Printer works but Windows does not detect the scanner

Check the scanner function separately. Compare Windows detection, USB or network connection, and another app before reinstalling the printer.

These are distinct functions: repeatedly reinstalling printing does not establish that the scanning component was installed.

Step-by-step solutions

01

Check whether Windows specifically sees the scanner

The multifunction device name alone does not confirm both functions.

  1. Open Printers & scanners in Settings and select the multifunction device. Look for its scanner function or settings; Microsoft says to check this separately on multifunction devices. In Windows Scan, check whether it appears in the scanner selector.

  2. If listed, test a non-private page and confirm you obtain an image. If Windows scans but another app does not, follow that branch. If the function is missing, distinguish USB from network. If the entire device is absent, use the printer-not-detected guide; blank printed output belongs to a different guide.

02

Check the USB path and scan installation

Working printing makes deleting its queue a less useful first step.

  1. Confirm power, direct connection, and the correct model. If Windows shows a USB error for the whole device, retain the code and use the USB guide. If printing works normally, check official model support for the scanner component compatible with your Windows version and its installation procedure.

  2. Install only missing supported software and check the scanner list again. Continued printing does not confirm scanner installation. If it remains absent after that procedure, keep version/model details for the manufacturer rather than repeating printer installation.

03

Check that the network allows scanner discovery

Two devices with internet access can still be separated for local traffic.

  1. Compare the PC’s network with the multifunction device’s network using its settings or panel. A similar Wi-Fi name, guest network, or VPN does not establish a usable shared local network. On a managed network, ask its owner to confirm permitted discovery/access.

  2. With the correct connection, use Add device or the manufacturer’s official network-scanner procedure. If it appears and scans, the local path or discovery mattered. If still absent, contact the manufacturer with that comparison; do not permanently disable the firewall or change random services.

04

Narrow the app when Windows Scan already works

An acquired image demonstrates that this hardware and Windows path can scan.

  1. Select the same scanner in the affected app and check which interface or software it supports in its help. Close the previous test before retrying. If another app works and only this one fails, keep that difference for app support.

  2. Do not delete a working print queue or install generic driver packs for an app that cannot find an already-working scanner.

05

Use another available PC to narrow the failure

The comparison is useful when it preserves the same device and relevant connection.

  1. If another authorized PC scans with that device, note differences in Windows, scanning software, and network. This reduces suspicion of the physical mechanism and focuses diagnosis on the original PC without proving exactly which setting fails.

  2. If another PC is unavailable, report that limitation; you do not need to buy accessories or delete devices to compensate. If no supported path exposes the scanner, model-specific support is next.

Next step

Still not working?

With verified connectivity and supported installation but no scanner detection, contact the manufacturer with model, Windows version, and results. If Windows Scan works, escalate to the specific app; do not repeat printing reinstalls.
