WS-116522-7WS-116522-7 means the latest system software version is not recognized or its update failed. It does not by itself identify a licence, DNS or storage problem. First distinguish the failed method: Internet, USB or disc. A different code during recovery needs its own diagnosis.
PS5 error WS-116522-7
A system software update failed. Return to the normal update flow and check whether it fails while downloading or installing.

Find your situation
See all the clues. Choose the one that matches what you observe.
Internet download failed
The console starts normally and updating fails during download or installation. Check the download and connection first; do not prepare a reinstallation yet.
USB update is not recognized
The file, folders or drive format can prevent reading. A file named PS5UPDATE.PUP is not necessarily the correct package.
Updating from a disc failed
The disc surface is a testable variable. If another method updates successfully, stop changing the system.

- Record the new code and stage. Do not keep applying WS-116522-7 steps if the failure now concerns connectivity or another operation.
Step-by-step solutions
Identify the failed method
Separate download, USB and disc before choosing recovery.
Record the full code and whether it appeared during download, USB reading or disc use. If the console is installing an update, wait: do not interrupt power to perform this check.
If you can reach the normal menu, check the update status. If Internet access also fails outside updating, fix connectivity first using the related guide; changing files will not repair a disconnected network.
With working Internet, follow the branch for the method used. If updating has completed and the code does not recur, do not perform additional recovery.
Retry a download over a stable connection
Select the system software download, view its error information and use Try Again if available.
- Control centre
- Downloads/Uploads
If it fails again and normal shutdown is available, save progress and restart the console. Try an available wired connection or move the console closer to the router without obstructions; change one variable so you can tell whether downloading progresses.
Only if the home connection is also unstable, and with permission from its users, turn off the router/modem for at least five minutes before turning it on. This interrupts Internet for everyone. If the provider or PlayStation has an outage, wait for recovery instead of repeating downloads.
If other services work and downloading fails again, move to the official USB method. If it completes, check the installed version once and stop. Do not change DNS, ports or licences as a repair for this code.
Check the disc before changing methods
With installation stopped and the disc normally ejected, check for dirt, fingerprints or scratches. Clean only with a soft cloth from the centre outward; do not use a cracked disc.
Try once if there was only surface dirt. If it fails identically or is damaged, use the official Internet or USB update. Success through that method narrows the problem to the disc path; it does not justify resetting the console.
Advanced checks
Continue if the earlier steps did not help. Read each procedure’s precautions first.
Use the USB update file, not the reinstallation file
On a PC or Mac, open the official PS5 system software page and download the UPDATE file. Sony also offers a REINSTALLATION file with the same filename: they are not interchangeable. Do not use third-party firmware.
Use a FAT32 or exFAT USB drive with enough free space. Create PS5 and then UPDATE inside it; place the file at PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP using those capitals. Check that duplicate downloads have not added a suffix or an extra extension.
With the console off and stable power, connect the drive. Hold the power button until the second beep to start Safe Mode; connect the controller with a USB data cable and press PS. Choose Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device > OK.
If the file is not recognized, check the package, path and format once before downloading again from Sony. If all three are correct and the same failure persists, stop and contact PlayStation with the code and method tested. Do not select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).
Still not working?
If the official file and a stable method still fail, give PlayStation the exact code, version if accessible and failure stage. If normal startup fails or stable power cannot be ensured, seek support before further recovery. Do not repeat cycles or turn a failed update into a preventive wipe.
