DualSense stick moves the camera or character by itself
Compare games before diagnosing stick drift. A controller update or reset and results across contexts determine whether repair support is needed.

Find your situation
See all the clues. Choose the one that matches what you observe.
It happens in only one game
Review that game’s controls and deadzone before attributing it to hardware.
It happens across games or contexts
Controller behavior deserves more attention than an isolated setting.
It changes with connection mode
Check the actual transport; a connected cable does not prove USB mode.
It persists after supported updating and reset
Keep the pattern for PlayStation Repairs without opening the controller.
Diagnostic signals
- ObservationA larger deadzone hides the movement
- It can mask a small input; it does not repair the controller or independently confirm a fault.
Step-by-step solutions
Observe the same stick in more than one context
A moving character does not yet demonstrate a physical stick defect.
Rest the controller without touching the stick and observe which axis moves. Compare another available game and menus where that stick actually controls something; a menu that does not use that axis is not a valid negative test.
If it occurs in only one game, follow its settings. If it repeats across contexts, keep that observation and continue with controller software. You do not need to buy games or another controller for this comparison.
Review game controls without confusing compensation with repair
A particular setting can explain why other games do not show the same movement.
Check camera options, alternative inputs, and deadzone if the game offers them. Record the original value and change only one relevant option before repeating the same scene. If the setting corrects behavior only there, keep that context for game support.
Increasing deadzone can hide a small input and change control response. Do not treat it as repair or proof that hardware is healthy; if the behavior later appears in other games, follow the controller branch.
Update the controller and compare again
A software change that removes the symptom avoids prematurely concluding repair is needed.
Save your game and follow official PS5 and DualSense device-software updates. Do not interrupt an update. Then repeat the same games or contexts without also changing their deadzones.
If movement disappears, stop: there is no reason to open the controller. If it persists, perform the official reset once and compare again.
Confirm the comparison’s communication mode
Charging while playing does not prove inputs are traveling over the cable.
If behavior seems different with a cable, confirm USB communication mode using Sony’s settings and documentation with a compatible data cable. Compare the same game and settings; do not mix a transport change with a deadzone change.
A repeatable difference points toward the connection path without proving stick damage. If control is lost or disconnects occur, use the related connection guide. If movement continues in both modes, keep that result for the persistent branch.
Reset the controller using Sony’s procedure
This is a limited test; repeating it without a change adds no new repair.
Turn off the PS5 and disconnect the controller. Locate the small rear reset hole and hold its button with a suitable tool for at least five seconds as Sony instructs. Do not introduce liquids or open the case.
Reconnect with the official USB cable and press PS. Repeat the observation in the previous contexts. If it recovers, stop; if movement returns, record the result for repair rather than resetting indefinitely.
Take the persistent pattern to PlayStation Repairs
Several contexts and unchanged official tests justify service, not blind home repair.
Report which stick and axis move, which games are affected, and the update, reset, and connection-comparison results. Request Sony’s analog-stick repair path.
Do not buy potentiometers or use unknown calibration sites as the next step. The behavior makes a controller problem more plausible, but physical diagnosis belongs with service.
Still not working?
Consistent movement across contexts after official updating and reset: stop invasive testing and seek repair support. A deadzone that hides it does not replace that assessment.
