Step-by-step solutions

01

Record the update and restart

Keep the code and KB number before retrying.

  1. In Settings > Windows Update, record the failed update and its KB number if shown. Save your work and restart the PC normally.

  2. Return to Windows Update and retry once. If the code changes, follow the new result.

02

Run Windows Update troubleshooting

Use the built-in diagnostic for this failure.

  1. Select Run and follow the instructions; this may open Get Help.

    2. System
    3. Troubleshoot
    4. Other troubleshooters
    5. Windows Update
  2. Keep the result even if it cannot fix the issue. On managed devices, ask IT before accepting policy changes.

03

Check available storage

Do not delete system folders to free space.

  1. Open Settings > System > Storage. If Windows requests room for the update, review personal files you can move or delete after backing them up.

  2. Do not rely on a universal free-space threshold: use the requirement shown for that update. If space is available and it still fails, keep the result for support.

Still not working?

Contact Microsoft or IT with the Windows version, KB, code and troubleshooter result. Do not delete SoftwareDistribution or edit the registry as the first response to this code.
