Step-by-step solutions
Close apps that may use the camera
Finish any call or recording you need to keep first.
Close video-call, recording and other camera apps normally. Open Windows Camera to test.
If it works, close Camera and retry the original app. Otherwise check permissions; failure does not prove another app is holding the camera.
Check the app’s permission
Allow only apps you intend to use the camera.
On Windows 11, review camera access and app permissions. On other versions, find Camera under privacy settings.
- Settings
- Privacy & security
- Camera
Check the option that applies to that app type and retry. Ask IT if policy prevents changing it.
Advanced checks
Continue if the earlier steps did not help. Read each procedure’s precautions first.
Identify an app that stayed open
Inspect processes without ending unfamiliar services.
If a camera app did not close, identify its process in Task Manager. Save any work and close only the recognized app.
Compare Camera with the affected app again and keep the code now shown.
Still not working?
If only one app fails, give its support team the permission state and Camera test result. If Windows stops detecting the device, switch to the 0xA00F4244 diagnosis.
