Error code
0x80070070

For 0x80070070 during Windows Update or a Windows upgrade. Microsoft normally associates it with insufficient space to store updates. The same number in another application needs its own context; this guide does not diagnose all such cases.

Step-by-step solutions

01

Confirm the context and measure the correct disk

The useful measurement is free space on the drive that contains Windows.

  1. Keep the full code, update, and failed stage. If it appears within Windows Update or a Windows upgrade, identify the operating system drive; do not assume it is always C: on a customized installation.

  2. In File Explorer, open that drive’s properties and note available space. Microsoft recommends at least 20 GB free on the operating system disk for best results when resolving this error. This is a working target, not a success guarantee or the exact requirement of every update.

  3. If space is short, follow backup and targeted cleanup. If sufficient headroom is already available, use the persistent-error branch: repeatedly freeing a few hundred MB and retrying does not provide a new test.

02

Back up before removing data

Recovering files matters more than forcing another attempt.

  1. Create the operating system disk backup recommended by Microsoft using a supported tool for your computer, and check how to recover the data. On a managed computer or virtual machine, coordinate backup with its administrator before changing storage.

  2. If you cannot protect important information, stop cleanup and request help. Do not count on a failed update or a restore point to replace a copy of your files.

03

Free identified space with supported tools

Choose dispensable content and measure again; do not disable update components for a capacity problem.

  1. Use Windows storage and cleanup options to review categories before confirming. Select only temporary or other items whose meaning you understand. Do not routinely include Downloads or previous installations: they may contain files or recovery options you still need.

  2. You can also uninstall genuinely unused apps or move personal files to a destination with capacity. Verify the backup and that transferred files open at the destination before removing the original. Do not manually move internal Windows or program folders.

  3. Check the operating system drive’s properties again. If it still lacks headroom and nothing can be safely removed, consult official external-storage update options when the wizard offers them, or support. Do not improvise partition expansion as the next step.

04

Retry once sufficient space is available

The capacity change lets you test the hypothesis rather than repeat identical attempts.

  1. Save work and run the update again through its normal path. Follow any requested restart and check the result. If it completes, do not keep cleaning or resetting components.

  2. If 0x80070070 persists despite sufficient space, record before/after free space and the correct drive. A nonstandard Windows location or VM quotas requires administrator review; a global figure from another drive does not resolve that condition.

  3. If another code appears, retain the new message and use its guide where available, such as 0xC1900101, 0x80070002, or 0x8007000d. Do not automatically carry the space explanation over to the new error.

05

Do not apply this path to another program based only on the number

The product and operation are part of the diagnosis.

  1. Record which program showed 0x80070070 and what you were trying to do. Consult its documentation or support; do not reset Windows Update services or delete their files when the operation is not a Windows update.

Next step

Still not working?

If it persists with sufficient space on the correct drive, stop repeated cleanup. Give Microsoft or the administrator the code, update, stage, location, and space figures; do not run command lists or delete more data without a new hypothesis.
