Steam game shows Running then returns to Play
Steam works, but the game never opens. Compare one title with several, look for a specific error, and verify files without deleting saves or DLLs.

Find your situation
See all the clues. Choose the one that matches what you observe.
Only one game fails
That title’s configuration, requirements, and files become more relevant.
Several unrelated games fail
Look for a shared condition without assuming which component it is.
Another launcher appears or fails
Its error can explain where startup stops.
The executable or log exposes an error
That message replaces generic guessing.
It began after an update, mod, or change
Compare only a change you can identify and safely reverse.
Diagnostic signals
- ObservationVerification passes, but it still will not open
- It does not certify requirements, personal settings, the launcher, or every system component.
Step-by-step solutions
Confirm the sequence and compare another game
Separate a title failure from a client or PC failure.
Record the state after clicking Play and let the attempt finish before repeating. Use ISS-0003 for Missing Executable, ISS-0015 if Steam will not open, and ISS-0012 if the PC restarts. Do not continue this path if the failure occurs after gameplay begins.
If another game is installed, check whether it reaches its menu without starting a session that could alter saves. An isolated title points to its support; several matching failures make the shared environment relevant without proving Steam is damaged.
Look for the error Steam’s interface does not show
The goal is evidence, not bypassing game requirements.
If an official launcher appears, first read its account, update, or startup notice. Do not share credentials or repeat purchases. If the title’s support allows launching its file directly, use Manage > Browse local files to locate only the documented executable.
Age of Empires documents this test for its game: it can expose an error hidden in Steam. For other titles, confirm that their launcher or anti-cheat allows that path; do not run random files or run as administrator by default. If a component or specific error appears, retain the text and follow its official documentation.
Verify the affected title’s files
A repair that changes the result provides a clue; repeating unchanged does not.
Close the game and preserve personal modifications or mods according to their documentation before verification. In Library, open Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Let it finish without other disk-intensive tasks.
If it retrieves files and now opens, stop. Valve notes that some local files may normally fail verification: do not treat every notice as proof of corruption. If verification finishes but the symptom remains, proceed to changes and requirements; do not download third-party DLLs.
Narrow the game change or requirement
A timing relationship deserves investigation, not certainty.
Compare official requirements, version, and the preceding change: update, mod, launch option, or launcher. If you can undo one of your own modifications using the title’s procedure, protect settings and saves first. Do not delete similarly named folders.
If returning to a supported state allows launch, retain which change mattered. Otherwise, give logs and context to the publisher. If several games fail, collect shared factors and specific security alerts; do not install every runtime or disable antivirus to guess.
Still not working?
One title still fails after supported checks: publisher support with sequence, version, and error/log. Several games: Steam/system support with the comparison. Do not reinstall Windows or the whole library or delete DLLs without diagnosis.

Steam cannot start the game: missing executable
Steam cannot launch the game because a required file is missing or another program is blocking access. A failed download, damaged file or security quarantine may be involved; antivirus is not always the cause.
View solutionSteam won't open
Check whether Steam creates no process, stays without a window, closes or shows an error. That result determines whether to inspect launching, close a stuck client or repair its installation.
View solutionPC restarts while gaming
The PC boots again on its own during a game. A Windows crash, instability or interrupted power can end in a restart; the symptom does not identify one component. If it stays off, use the gaming shutdown guide.
