ProblemA black screen alone does not identify a faulty battery, display or board. Apple recommends a model-specific forced restart and charging before service if the phone still will not turn on.

Step-by-step solutions

01

Connect a compatible charger and check for a charging indication

Do not override a liquid-detection alert.

  1. Connect a compatible charger in good condition. If the low-battery indicator appears, charge for at least 30 minutes or until it starts.

  2. If no image appears, continue with the restart for your model. Do not open the phone to inspect the battery.

03

If it does not start, charge before retrying

Do not keep repeating the restart.

  1. If the restart does not turn it on, Apple directs charging for one hour and trying again.

  2. If it still will not start, stop repeating button combinations and request service.

Advanced checks

Continue if the earlier steps did not help. Read each procedure’s precautions first.

02

Use your model’s button combination

Apply only the matching sequence.

  1. For Face ID or iPhone SE 2nd/3rd generation: quickly press and release volume up, then volume down; hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.

  2. For iPhone 7/7 Plus, hold side and volume down together until the logo. For iPhone 6s or earlier, hold Home and side or top until the logo. For another model, consult its Apple manual procedure before trying.
