Step-by-step solutions

Check power and restart the controller

A low battery can affect a controller that still turns on.

  1. For removable AA batteries, try a fresh set with the indicated polarity. For a rechargeable model, charge it according to its instructions. Do not open models with an internal battery.

  2. Hold the controller’s Xbox button for 5–10 seconds to turn it off. Wait a few seconds and turn it on again.

Pair using the console and controller buttons

The Xbox button stays lit when connected.

  1. With console and controller on, press and release the console’s Pair button. Its location differs on Series X, Series S and Xbox One; use the model illustration in Sources.

  2. Within 20 seconds, hold the Pair button on top of the controller until the Xbox button flashes. Wait for a steady light and test the menu.

Compare with a USB data connection

This check separates wireless pairing from wired response.

  1. Connect the controller directly to the console with a compatible data cable: micro-USB or USB-C depending on the controller. A charge-only cable cannot perform this test.

  2. Try the menu. If USB works but wireless does not, report that difference to support; if neither works, also report the cable and power source you tested.

Still not working?

If it still cannot connect, use the official Xbox controller troubleshooter or request service with the exact model and wired/wireless results. Do not reset the console or buy a replacement before isolating the failure.
