Step-by-step solutions
Check the Windows Update service
Keep the check limited to the update service.
Find Services from Start and open Windows Update. Check whether it is stopped or disabled.
If the computer is managed or changes are unavailable, do not force permissions. If you manage it and there is no intentional restriction, continue with enabling it.
Advanced checks
Continue if the earlier steps did not help. Read each procedure’s precautions first.
Enable or start the service when appropriate
Leave unrelated services unchanged.
With administrator authorization, enable Windows Update if disabled and start the service. Follow the update configuration appropriate to the computer.
Save work, restart normally and check for updates again. If the service becomes disabled again, investigate how it is managed rather than repeatedly changing it.
Still not working?
If the service will not start or stops again, give IT or Microsoft the exact message. Do not disable antivirus protection or edit the registry to force Windows Update on.
